Food, Glorious Food......
Just got tagged by beer brat with another meme. Dang! I still have YET to post a meme from an earlier tag by blogger
kadyo. But this one from bb is rather, well.....lip smacking. Nope, this one isn't about chicks, but food, heh. Specifically, 5 childhood memories of food. Besides, the other meme is quite long and it might take time for me to finish it, so I'll post this short one first and finish the other one over the weekend.....If I'm up to it.
While it's easy for BB to go through his memory since he only had to go back a few years, 15 at most. I on the other hand, have to travel back more than 30 years, geez. I doubt if I will remember all that was good in my childhood, especially food. But anyway, I'll take a shot at it.....
5 Childhood Memories of Food
1) Venison- That's deer meat to the uninitiated. Ok, ok don't look at me like I just killed Bambi! Venison WAS a popular meat in medieval times, ok? And it is considered as a delicacy even in the US. I remember that a relative used to bring us fresh deer meat once a month and my Mom would make a sumptuous dinner whenever we get this oh so tender and tasty treat. Up to this day, I don't know how or where she learned how to cook venison, but who cares? It's THAT good. These days though it is illegal to hunt them (I think) and is considered an exotic treat like wild boar (Yummy too!) and wild fowls. I heard that one can still get them in some far flung provinces.
Oh, and if you're curious as to what it smells and tastes like. Well......It's kinda gamey, but tasty.
2) Chocnuts- This was and still is, popular among children and adults. A mixture of powdered chocolate, milk and bits of finely ground nuts ( Really, I'm not sure of the ingredients), it has been around since God knows when and I use to wolf down a lot of these when I was a kid. These days you still can buy a pack of 12 and 24 pcs in the supermarket. Nope I don't buy them anymore, my taste had long since graduated to Hershey's, Cadbury's and.....Godiva (Yeah, dream on snglguy).
3) Fishballs- This is considered street food and is as popular today as it was when it first came out in the early early 70's. Everyday after classes, you'd find a crowd (Including me) gathered around a cart selling these little suckers. I really enjoyed those crispy deep fried rolled fishmeat dipped in either a sweet syrupy sauce or my favorite, a chili laden vinegar. Oh yeah, they're still around....And is still a favorite snack among students on a budget.
4) Peanut soup- When I was younger, I would always venture out to Chinatown (Yes, I was already a wanderlust then) which is only a few blocks away from my old neighborhood just to whet my appetite for this popular chinese delicacy. I'm not sure if the old place still serves this....
5) Mom's potato soup- My mom always loved to experiment with food, with us kids as guinea pigs. One of her experiment was her creamy potato soup. The first time we got a taste of her concoction we readily gave her a thumbs up and has since become our favorite. Man, I really love that thick, creamy, and FATTENING cholesterol laden comfort food......
Those are all that I can remember of my childhood love affair with food. I'm sure there are more but my memory isn't as good as beer brat's. Thank God that I'm only required to list down 5. And now for the fun part......
